Humility - appropriate and pleasing

James 4:10

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up in honor.

1 Peter 5:6

So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time He will lift you up in honor.

Ecclesiastes 5:2

...after all, God is in heaven, and you are here on earth.  So let your words be few.

Consider how lovely, how beautiful, how pleasing to God humility is.  Since you were created for the honor of God, it is appropriate for you to be humble.

But here, as everywhere in the life of grace, let faith be the chief means by which you achieve this.  Believe in the power of the eternal life that works in you.  Believe in the power of Jesus, who is your life.  Believe in the power of the Holy Spirit, who dwells in you.  Do not attempt to hide your pride or to forget it or root it out yourself.  Instead, in the sure confidence that the blood cleanses and the Spirit sanctifies, confess every trace of this sin.  Learn from Jesus, who is gentle and humble in heart.  Consider that he is your life, and all that he has is clothed with humility, in order that you may be clothed with Jesus.  It is Christ in you that shall fill you with humility.

This is written by Andrew Murray (AD 1828-1917) - born in South Africa and lived there most of his life.  His life's mission was to preach Christ to all within his area of influence.  He believed he was called to reach people in Africa and worked to start a training school that would raise up missionaries to bring the gospel to as many people as possible
