I. Course Description: This two-semester course offers a broad survey of the Old Testament. The fall semester will cover the Pentateuch and Historical Books while the spring semester will cover the books of Poetry and Prophecy. Particular attention will be given to the storyline of the Old Testament, and where each book fits into that story. Introductory issues of each book such as authorship, date, historical context, key theological issues and contributions to the New Testament will also be examined.

II. Course Objectives:
To gain a comprehensive understanding of the storyline of the Old Testament, be able to place major people, places, and events into the context of that story, and become familiar with what God has revealed to us through that story.
To familiarize students with the contents of each book of the Old Testament, with some attention given to critical issues related to each book.
To discuss the major theological motifs found in the Old Testament—such as creation, sin, judgment, covenant, law, atonement, holiness, and grace.
To gain a basic understanding of the formation of the canon of the Old Testament.
To gain a basic understanding of the relationship between the Old Testament and the New Testament.

III. Course “Requirements”:
To read through the entire Old Testament in conjunction with our class discussions and textbook reading assignments.
To enjoy reading the text, Encountering the Old Testament, by Bill T. Arnold and Bryan E. Beyer.
To attend and mentally engage yourself in class regularly. To download and listen to any lectures that you are unable to attend.
To complete any homework assignments, quizzes and tests.
To share what you are learning with others in your life.

Cost:
There is a $15 fee for enrollment in any SCM class. However, the fee covers as many classes as you wish to take. *Students will be asked to purchase their own textbooks. All texts will be available in CFC’s bookstore at a discounted price.
